Eclectic flagship - 2003 Infiniti Q45 sedan
In spite of all the new-found commotion at Infiniti these days concerning all-new products, the automaker has not neglected the Q45, affectionately known as the Q-ship to the Infiniti faithful. For 2003, the third generation Infiniti flagship receives two dozen separate enhancements, designed to bring more excitement, luxury, convenience and style to the performance luxury sedan.
The large Infiniti sedan is powered by an innovative 4.5L V-8 engine and bolted to a high torque capacity five-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with manual shift mode. Equipped like a driving enthusiast's wish list of state-of-the-art technology, the Q45 is offered in Luxury and Premium models.
Avant-garde styling with dynamic and sport forms combine with body-color side molding and body-color handles with chrome accent to make a bold fashion statement.
Manufactured by Nissan Motor Company, Ltd. at Tochigi, Japan, the rear-drive Infiniti Q45 sedan is immediately recognized by its large, multi-lens projector High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights.
Resembling a pair of Gatlin' guns, seven individual lenses and a free-surface reflector design combine, to provide a wide distribution beam pattern, utilizing a large luminous flux, creating the most powerful headlight system in the world. Additionally, the beam area is wide enough so additional fog lights are not necessary.
On the road, the large Infiniti is a true driver's car. The powertrain works seamlessly with the suspension hardware to deliver a memorable driving experience -- whether running the Pacific Coast Highway or down the street to the grocery store.
The four-wheel independent suspension features a front strut suspension with stabilizer bar combined with a multi-link rear suspension design to provide a supple ride and "smooth and secure" handling.
The Premium model features an Active Damping Suspension system that tailors shock-absorber response to conditions and continuously monitors and varies damping within a range of 16 steps, including driver-selectable "Auto" and "Sport" modes.
Rubber at the four corners consists of P225/55VR17 (Luxury) or P245/45VR18 (Premium) tires designed to keep the large Infiniti sedan attached to the pavement. Consumers concerned about tire safety may opt for run-flat P225/55R17 tires.
Inside the cabin, Infiniti's first-ever voice recognition system controls the Bose audio system, HVAC system and select navigation system functions. The system provides audible feedback with beeps to signify listening or errors as well as verbal phrases. This feature increases Q45's control level because the driver's hands can stay on the wheel at all times.
Driver and passengers are surrounded by luxury. Displays and controls are sophisticatedly easy. The center stack is very user friendly. The cabin carries five occupants in total comfort. Finished in rich textured materials, soft leather and genuine Bird's Eye Maple wood abound.
The Vehicle Information System (VIS) is mounted at the highest position on the instrument panel for best visibility and operability. The LCD screen can also be used to view what is behind the Q when equipped with the rearview monitoring system. The monitor operates when reverse gear is selected, displaying an image using a small camera mounted near the rear license plate.
