Columbus, Georgia, founded in 1828, was named for Christopher Columbus. The city is located on the western side of Georgia and is about 100 miles southwest of Atlanta. Columbus has eight different historic neighborhoods that are all listed in the National Register of Historic Places. McClung Memorial Stadium, a football stadium; the Bradley Theater, a performance theater that opened in 1940; the Columbus Civic Center, a multipurpose arena that hosts a lot of concerts; and the Springer Opera House.
The city of Columbus has around fifty parks, four recreation centers, and four senior centers. The Chattahoochee RiverWalk, the Columbus Fall Line Trace, and the Black Heritage Trail are all walking trails in the area. Columbus also has seven different golf courses. Standing Boy Creek State Park is a Georgia state park that was created by executive order in 2004. The state park includes Lake Oliver, which is great for swimming and boating. The state park also offers camping, hiking, and hunting.
There are a number of higher education institutions in Columbus, such as Columbus State University, Columbus Technical College, and Christian Life School of Theology. Branch campuses for Troy University, Virginia College, Strayer University, and more are located in Columbus.
